The Image of God

Matthew 22:17-21

Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

While as a country we are in the midst of tax seasons, sometimes we wish that Jesus would have said no. Just like it’s easy to make this scripture all about taxes and a miracle of provision but it’s much more. It is a scripture about a worldview and a way of seeing life. When Jesus says give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. We have to think about what is it that we should give to God. Genesis lets us know that we are made in the image of God and if we believe that is true we have a choice to make. We must give ourselves to the God in whose image we are made instead of giving ourselves to what this world defines as a good image, title, reputation, or success. I know some of us have gotten off track. Some painters used to reuse canvases and paint images over images. Science has advanced to the point of being able to see the painting that is underneath. If science can do that, imagine what God can do. When we are wearing masks, pretenses, and covered in sin, mistakes and regrets, God can come and peel off the top layer to find His image underneath.

There was a time when I was insecure and it was this scripture that reminded me of my value and purpose. God let me know if I was made in His image, how can I not be beautiful, valuable and of great worth. Remember this as you face decision and challenges ahead. You carry more than yourself. Somewhere in you is the very image of God.
